The Ladies Horn

We are in the debt of our beautiful wives for the manifestation of this award.

At the inaugural Ladies Day back in 1998 (see The Socials), the ladies decided to give The Horn to the male member who stood firm against the competition and shot the best round of the day.

However, the junior section of the society soon started to emerge and that in turn led to the addition of a Family Day to the social calendar (see The Socials). As such, it became commonplace for this award to be contested on this special day. So, that made this the only Society trophy not to be contested on a golf course, but rather on the estate of whichever member hosted said event. A clue as to the nature of the competition format and venue for 'The Horn' can be found next to the entry in the Roll Of Honour. The trophy was presented by Mrs Chair and subsequently 'engraved' using the time-honoured 'tippex' technique - as can be seen in the picture below.

It was hoped that at least one Society member would continue to remain affluent enough to offer the sort of outdoor environment suited to the tournament, as a return to the dark days of competing for such a prestigious award via a series of board games was dreaded by all and sundry (unless it was Mousetrap, which everyone really likes, especially the end bit when the cage comes down on the mouse).

But alas, the tradition of Family Day has been ravaged by busy social calendars and so more often than not, the years pass without this magnificent implement being contested.

An interesting piece of history attached to this Society artefact is that during one excited moment of playfulness, one of the male members tried to spank a female member using The Horn, only to see it break in his hands! Fortunately for him, The Horn was returned to its former glory, thanks to some expert dowel and glue work by Lionel Tester.
